Today's the day!
Today is their first really BIG hike day, where they will hike up and (hopefully) over Whiskey Mountain—topping out at over 11,000 feet and ending the day down around 9,000 feet. Not gonna lie, it's going to be a hard one and there will most certainly be tears at some point—but this is the hike that will get them officially into the remote backcountry where they will be spending the rest of the trip.
What have they been up to the past couple of days?
They've been continuing to learn skills that will aid them in their journey...

They are learning how to read a map and use a compass to help them get where they want to go.

Learning how to cook is essential on a trip like this. When at altitude, your body burns a LOT more calories than normal, so you need more fuel to keep you going. But cooking shouldn't just be about fueling your body, it should be about creativity and learning about one another...lots of great conversations happen over meal time.

What does carrying food on a trip like this look like? It's all bulk. We partner with an organization called NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) to provide our food.
Above, the group is going through all of their food items at the trail head and determining what they want to take and what they want to leave. It's a delicate balance—making sure you have enough food to get to the next ration and knowing that the more food you bring, the heavier your pack will be!
*Note, the cover photo is of the first campsite that they hiked in to.
