Resupplies and randomness
Ever wonder how the group carries food for 5 weeks?? Well, the short answer is, they don't!
The food is organized by what we call 'ration' periods. This can be anywhere from 5 days long to the longest stretch, which is 11 days. Up to this point, the group has resupplied their food themselves (leaving it at the trailhead in our box trailer, hiking out, getting the food, and then hiking back in). But now that they are back in the more remote area, this is no longer feasible.
So then, how do they get their food? Horses!
That's right, we partner with a local outfitter to bring in the group's food (and other items) via horses. The horses are still limited in how far in they are able to go, so the group will need to hike a bit to meet them, but it's still not nearly as far as going all the way back out to trailhead!
Their first ration like this is happening today, so from now on, their packs will be a bit heavier until they start making their way through their food stores. They will have one more resupply like this on the trip.
