That time a father and son joined CCO staff together

A year after Drew Elling graduated from Westminster College—nearly three decades ago—he signed a three-year contract with the CCO to minister to students at his alma mater through a partnership with New Wilmington Presbyterian Church. And then life circumstances prevented him from fulfilling that commitment.

After leaving the CCO, Drew and his wife, Jennifer, moved to Massachusetts to attend Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. “I planned to return to the CCO after seminary, but God had other plans,” Drew says. “Over the past 22 years, I have served as a pastor in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Georgia churches. The passion for reaching young people has always been there, though.”

This past year, Drew sensed God calling him into a new chapter—and that’s when he wondered: What about the CCO?

“I talked with Jennifer about it and God had given her the same idea that day!” Drew says. “We knew God was up to something.” That was confirmed when they found out that their son, Jackson, a graduating college senior, had applied for the CCO Fellowship Program.

In September, Drew finally realized his dream of returning to the CCO. While Jackson now serves as a CCO Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, Drew and Jennifer have moved their family to Florida to join CCO colleague Heather Turnwall at Trinity Wellsprings Church to pioneer a new ministry at Eastern Florida State College and Florida Institute of Technology.

“This allows me to continue being a pastor but also to dive back into campus ministry,” Drew says. “It's a dream come true to get to do this, back full circle with the CCO after all these years—and to do it with my son. And I get to fulfill my three-year commitment, only 30 years after I started!”

There is evidence everywhere of God’s ongoing call to the CCO to continue our 50-year history of transforming college students to transform the world. Would you please give today so that staff members like Drew and Jackson might continue to reach college students for the next 50 years?
